Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story (2024) is a Canadian documentary directed by Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee that chronicles the life of Jackie Shane, a pioneering Black transgender soul singer who captivated Toronto’s music scene in the 1960s before vanishing from the public eye in 1971. Through previously unheard phone interviews with Shane recorded before her death in 2019, the film explores her rise to fame, her sudden disappearance, and her enduring legacy. Utilizing rotoscope animation featuring drag performer Makayla Couture, along with archival photos and interviews, the documentary brings Shane’s story to life, highlighting her courage to live authentically in a time of widespread discrimination. The film premiered at the 2024 SXSW Festival and received critical acclaim, earning accolades such as the DGC Ontario Special Jury Prize at Hot Docs and the Rogers Best Canadian Documentary Award from the Toronto Film Critics Association. It was also named one of TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten films of 2024 .
